Professional Tattoo Aftercare Guide | Titch Tattoo Blyth

Your new tattoo is a fresh wound; how you treat it in the next few weeks determines how it will look for the next few decades. Follow these steps to ensure your ink stays vibrant and heals perfectly.

1. The Initial Wrap

Your artist has applied a protective dressing. The type of wrap determines how long you should keep it on:

  • Cling Film: Remove after 3–4 hours.
  • Tattoo Armour: Remove after 12 hours.
  • Second Skin (Saniderm/Dermalize): Keep on for 24–48 hours unless there is significant fluid leakage.

2. The First Wash

Always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching your new tattoo.

  • Cleanse: Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Gently use your hand to remove any excess ink or plasma. Do not use a loofah or washcloth.
  • Dry: Pat the area dry with a clean, single-use paper towel. Do not rub. Let it air dry for 5–10 minutes before applying any product.

3. Moisturising & Maintenance

  • Choosing a Balm: After 12 hours, apply a very thin layer of cocoa butter or other heavy moisturiser. Avoid petroleum-based products (like Vaseline), as they can clog pores and trap bacteria.
  • Less is More: You only need a light film. If the tattoo looks "wet" or "shiny," you've applied too much.

4. Lifestyle Adjustments (The "Don'ts")

  • No Soaking: Avoid baths, saunas, and swimming (including the North Sea!) for at least 10–14 days. Quick showers are fine.
  • No Scratching: As it heals, the tattoo will itch and flake. This is normal. Do not pick or scratch, as this can pull ink out. Gently pat the area if the itching is intense.
  • Sun Protection: Keep your fresh tattoo out of direct sunlight. Once fully healed (approx. 4 weeks), always use a high-factor SPF to prevent fading.

5. When to Call the Studio

A bit of redness and swelling is normal in the first 48 hours. However, contact us or a medical professional if you notice:

  • Excessive heat or spreading redness.
  • Pus or an unusual odor.
  • Red streaks leading away from the tattoo site.
